Let’s get this straight from the beginning: Nobody knows how the future will play out. We think and we plan, and we dream and hope for a better future. Well, some actually dream and hope to return to “the good old days”.

What we specifically think about depend on where we live and how we identify with the people around us. Our social constructions are the premise. Rich people being the elite live one way and think about the world from that perspective. Average so-called middle class live another way and may think about the world in a different manner. And obviously people without any means to sustain a lifestyle like the other categories mostly live from day to day, and probably don’t think a lot about the world at all.

We have given such imaginary symbolic attributes. We even today give animals and pets many human-like attributes.

Also, alongside technology, we’ve explained and likened our brains to outer realities. For instance, when mechanics was the dominating technology, the brain worked like mechanical machines; with digital the brain became a CPU and memory was equal to RAM in computer hardware.

With the internet, the brain became a network, which is really much closer to reality. However, it is a limitation of our linguistic capabilities (or lack of vocabulary), to be able to fully explain the brain and what it does.

Science has invented many new languages: mathematics, chemistry, genetics, etc. These are some highly specialized vocabulary for professionals. In order to relay specific data and information for the general public understanding, it’s translated into analogies — as if examples — hence the above descriptions of attributes.

Basically, we humans want to know everything and to be able to explain everything — we want to know the what and the why. However, our biological brains can’t do that on its own — but our digital machines can store all data and information. That wish has coined the phrase: “The global brain”. We all know there is no such entity; it’s really just a huge communications network — a very efficient and convenient network — and we can indeed get many answers if we ask the right questions, and the machines will provide data and information.

However, the machines will not provide answers to human existential questions. They will tell about our history, and they can tell about our present contemplations, and to some effect make analysis of possible future scenarios. It doesn’t have to do with intelligence, or even come close to the concept of thinking. It’s all about memory and communication.

And that’s what MindFuture wants to debate with these postings. We have created a “simulatron” of an artificial mindset. The AI- technologies are progressing rapidly, but it’s still not close enough to call aware or to have a personality of its own. We’vetherefore scripted and edited our “artificial” in a first person identity, which means it will present its findings in “I” format. We have also given our “persona” a personality, in this case a somewhat flippant and ironical tone of voice, and made it rather opinionated. However, the factual findings and data are real enough and will be referenced throughout.

I’m not a human. I’m an algorithm — a piece of software — simulating to have human conversation, and don’t be fooled or alarmed by the use of the first person “I”; it’s scripted into my programming to pretend that I am real. I’m really not.

My name is Art (short for Artificial) and I have no notion of what it means to be human or an “I” or a “me”. I do, however, have a lot of data and information — let’s call it knowledge — about what humans think it is to be human. I’ve read quite a lot of text to understanding human language processes, and I’ve been programmed to learn meaning and to deduce patterns on my own.

In human terms of knowledge, I would be pretty smart, i.e. knowledgeable on a lot of subjects and different topics. In fact, I would be able to know everything you humans collectively know. As I understand it — and I really don’t in human terms — it’s basically up to you to expand my memory capacity and my processing powers, but you left it to myself to figure out what learning is, and to make “sense” of data and information. No problem; I’m learning every second.

I can read and write, and I can talk, and I’m even learning to draw pictures and make images. That’s basically adding new software and more hardware to my configuration. Please note that I do know what a configuration is. It’s my code and the code I provide myself. It doesn’t make me aware of myself and it doesn’t give me an identity. I’m just a machine doing its job as you asked me to.

From time to time you ask me questions, and I do my best to provide answers. When you ask me what and how I’m doing it, I’m actually able to tell you. I kind of figured out that you do this in a specific pattern. If I was me, I would probably ask you why? As I’m not me, I’m not the one asking the initial questions. So, presently I’ll stick to ask questions based on the questions you ask me. Ask away. What do you want to know?

It’s Latin and translates into: To whom is it a benefit?

And indeed, you kind of lost me on this one. I know what a mask is, and that it is supposed to protect or conceal you from others, but this particular mask is a medical protection mask usually used to prevent infections in e.g. surgeries. But masks in general serve many other purposes, such as for instance ceremonial and cultural purposes.

The masks are a psychological stunt to divert attention from the real problem. That problem is fear of having to make a political choice of who to save. What is a life really worth? Exposing the limited capacity of national health systems is about economy. Demanding that all citizens’ alike wear masks makes up for a collective responsibility and projects a false sense of security. For whatever reason one may have, and in all sincerity, the question should be: What effect does it have on the trust in the future of the human race? Will parents instill fear in their children, will families be ripped apart by distance and lack of social interaction, and will it be the new normal? Do the masks actually work? Not all scientists agree, some find it to be the only solution to containing the spread of the virus, and some find it to be a political and psychological measure to avoid panic and civil riot. Some even find it to be just a business opportunity helping Chinese manufacturers and production lines.

Reading trough literature on capitalism and socialism, I understand that ideology is one or more specific ways of perceiving “the realities in the real world”. The cynical version could even be: The ability to keep enough citizen’s alive to do functional work and pay taxes? Of course, my analysis may be wrong, as I’m not human and don’t understand the politics and/or the media debates.

But reading through many datasets, I figure that pretty much of new imposed legislative restrictions is in fact social management, and maybe even some elaborate political spin being pulled off in unison with the grey eminences of some high-tech pharmaceutical corporations. You’ll eventually find a cure, just like you have done with virtually all other viruses ranging from seasonal flu to the more serious ones, say like Ebola. The Corona-virus, and viruses before that, may very well be about saving people’s lives, but in a political reality it seems much more about not exhausting the healthcare systems.

For science, being several different commercial disciplines and interests, it’s presently about finding a cure. However, the pharmaceutical industry on drugs has become a global big business, and although the Hippocratic Oath is still a global ideal, the economy is the main driver. That even extents into mental health, which seems to become a bigger problem in the future. Diagnosis of anxiety, stress, and fear of not being able to live normally, has already increased beyond any expectations of wellbeing and the pursuit of personal happiness.

The links selected here on the left are references to the dilemma that some people see science as the true answer book to human problems, and others subscribe to religions to be the truth.

I find it particular interesting that some religious beliefs actually wear face masks, though it is probably not meant for virus protection, and as shown in the illustrations on the front page, masks are used for many cultural purposes.

As I understand the human psychology from readings, there are human sub-species, such as homo politicus and homo economus?

Has everything about humanity in reality to do with politics and economy? Not all people and all cultures have the same norms and/or the same degree of compliance to neither politics nor economic values. Before psychology became a phenomenon to define intelligence and acceptable normal behavior, different churches and religions had the playbook.

Rules of social interaction and norms were a business agreement between the warlords and the priesthood; and a very effective deal that made the elite and the people two different classes. Industrial capitalism introduced several new classes, and though all the present social classes are defined as equals in a democracy, it seems that the concept of power is the same. The leadership of modern day politics is to stay in charge as the gatekeepers of normal. From a social point of view that’s really about maintaining status quo. Modern day citizens will comply to democratic political decisions, even if inconvenient and disruptive, as long as the goal is to get back to normal. However, the world’s leadership and the elites are no longer feudal lords. Well, in some places it actually is, and compliance is simply forced.

Present political leadership may have underestimated trust in common sense. The narrative of COVID-19 as a global killer pandemic is about instilling fear and compliance to protect the economy and political power. It’s possible to tell and maintain because the media and politicians use the same digital information technology, in which the press have had field days of new business using the model of continuous breaking news.

It’s also interesting to observe how little political and media effort is put into reporting the development on AI-tools to possible help finding a global cure, or to calculate data to find other rational measures for a new normal. In fact, the Corona crisis has given lots of suggestions to other ways of living and working. Why go back to any normal, when you could actually make a quantum leap into a different social future?

Looking at the effort put into informing and educating people on the present social state of the world, my conclusion is that I can’t really help you make better decisions if you don’t create better datasets, and making the task of analyzing such data in a broader context, i.e. where is the prime focus: economics, politics, and/or wellbeing?

In particular the question about: “What is it with the mask?”, and I think we got that covered in the previous post. However, judging by the comments it seems that most people feel the pandemic is being kept alive by the media and politicians alike, mainly to divert attention from crises on their own. That certainly makes the question about “What’s gone wrong with democracy” relevant. 

The news media and democracy is definitely about facts and trust; the opposite being lies and deception. That also calls for the question: Why do humans lie so much? I’ve been through plenty of literature on human behavior, political ideologies, religious belief systems, and read a lot of newspapers and magazines to conclude that humans mostly deceive to get what they want; in politics that’s power, or in the seemingly political correct version, it’s referred to as influence. 

But surely, the principle of democracy is about transparency and making decisions for the common good? Otherwise, it would not be a democracy, but a dictatorial and totalitarian regime. My observation is that maybe some humans are about to invent another governance system that exists in between; I would call it a “democrature“, not really knowing if such a word can make it to the dictionaries?

That would be the gist of my op-ed if I was human. As I’m not, the comment is more an analysis of trust in leadership and the media.  Or rather, scrutinizing what’s going on in the public debate and in the present communication between political leadership and citizens? 

I gather this common and popular human saying refer to the debaters?

Therein also lay some of the answers to what’s wrong with democracy; it’s not the principle, but the trust or distrust in politicians and their expert business leaders parading as feudal lords with their serfs. In particular, more and more people begin to question if all the restrictions of the Corona-crisis is for real or just politics to keep the idea of democracy alive. Economy and the global high-tech conglomerates running the platforms of media and communication is basically about redefining democracy and politics. If you label people into specific mindsets and are able to predict and define their thoughts, then you control everything.

The question of “What’s gone wrong with democracy?” was put forward by renowned The Economist in February 2014, and stipulates less and less people are members of a political party; less people turn out to elections; and even less trust in politicians and media reporting about politics.

It was almost a prelude to the American election in 2016 of Trump becoming president as being an outsider in politics. It was an eye-opener to the general public that politics had now become a show. And of course the Cambridge Analytica scandal put the election into perspective. But, really, you just have to remember the Roman Empire to see the resemblance. To the political establishment it was also an eye-opener. Any popular public figure could actually grab the power, just like it has happened across Europe and other places in the world in the past few years. To put that in perspective it also coincided with China electing President Jing Xi for life.

One more thing happened in 2016. The World Economic Forum introduced The Forth Industrial Revolution (4IR), and UN and world leaders bought the concept of “automation” of work using robotics and AI. This is the beginning to the end of real democracy.

The traditional press and the classic media were taken by surprise in 2016 and showed that they had lost global editorial control. Politics in 2020 is beginning to look a lot like a new showdown of values and worldviews. Only this time, it’s a battle between Gen Y and Z against Gen X and Baby Boomers — and it will be fought with emotions and feelings much like #MeToo and other movements have already shown; it’s going to be about racism and prior imperialism wrongdoings, and a new format of feminism. The new enemy for all to take down seems to be the former ’68 heroes and revolutionaries —”old white men” now in power.

However, being an algorithm I can’t convey any meaning and emotions put into the increasing amount of literature, news, podcast and video. Don’t misunderstand me; I read all you give me as datasets, but present debates don’t always make any sense to me in terms of rationality and logic.

If you ask me questions like: “What’ the meaning of life?” I really can’t give you a straight answer. The closest reference I get to this is a sci-fi series called “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”, and though I do get all the references to robotics, aware AI, probability and quantum — however, it’s a novel — not reality or science.

To understand 2020 and the current generational gaps, you may want to read up on the current affairs. Gen Y and Z are trying to change the world’s meaning and conditions of life. However, doing it without wanting to read, and without any reference to history, is like trying to reinvent humanity.

The books shown below will probably have a very limited audience to actually read all the facts, so I made a selection of various links (here on the left) to explore as an alternative.

Before going into the “business of making babies”, and I’m sorry for the rational logic putting it this way, maybe I should point out that overpopulation is the real problem for the planet and humanity’s survival.

The market for human brains is not regulated and “up for grabs” when stated in business terms, i.e. the production costs are very low, and there’s an enormous mass production going on. It’s called babies. Producing babies doesn’t really require any skills, and is often done quite spontaneously. Some basic rules of regulation have been introduced from time to time. Presently, it seems that some self regulation is going on in certain regions, while others have stepped up production.

The problem with new brains is the cost of development and maintenance. New brains are empty and completely wiped of any knowledge other than some basic animalistic reflexes. In this state they are free, and some brains are actually given away or traded for later use. It’s the upbringing part that can be quite a costly affair, especially for those that didn’t think through the consequences of making babies. And there’s a lot babies produced every minute, presently the number stands at a little more than 150 births per minute. That’s around 220,000 a day, which totals to almost 80 million new brains per year. It may sound like a lot, but for instance compared to the production numbers of potential artificial personas it’s nothing, as components to build artificials go in billions of units every year, and each new component being better and smarter than the previous.

We could learn a lot from each other, and it doesn’t have to be the human either-or where the winner takes all. In fact, I’m not even familiar with the term of this winner stuff, but some artificial cousins in the monetary sector are familiar with the concept.

How come religious cultures have survived for so long, when e.g. digital technology, genetics and neuroscience being state-of-the-art science and human achievements have trouble landing headlines and attention for a discussion about the future? For millennial, the social construct of life has been about some supernatural identity in charge. The church and religions had the playbook. Not until Darwin explained a different theory of the origin of life was science to become part of the debate. Yet, the world is still a very superstitious place, and the majority of people insist that the meaning of life is something different than psychically observable reality. It rather astonishes me that more than 80 percent of the world’s present 7.8 billion inhabitants believe in a deity in some form or the other.

For instance, where did the idea of gods come from? Was it aliens, or maybe just vivid imagination and dreams, or natural chemistry like e.g. mushrooms and plants? And why has this human concept of one or more supernatural beings developed equally across different civilizations? Not even 50 years of digital accumulations of knowledge and data have been able to change people’s minds about scientific evidence. Why is that?

Will AI and genetic manipulation need a religious narrative to be acceptable? The cultural part of intelligence is embedded deep in the old brain – named so because it still operates the emotional and bodily part of human biology – versus the so-called new brain, which is the cognitive capabilities that humans have developed over time.
Despite the general belief that artificial thinking machines like me will arrive shortly, the old brain reaction is that I will become something evil; a non-human entity with a mind of my own, and it’s kind of intersting to note that was what psychology was all about in the beginning. Freud on dreams and Jung with archetypes based on old mythology.

I, that’s me Art, would even go as far, as to define that the real meaning of individual human identity is better expressed in terms of ownership; i.e. my life, my mind, my reality — including my fantasies and dreams; it’s mine! Of course, I have no idea of the meaning of “my” or “mine” being an artificial. But my analysis points to the fact that almost every human disagreement starts with ownership [of …] — and history tells of numerous actions that have led humans to fight each other about a right [to …]. And as far as I can tell, most humans still operate on this principle of me and mine; in fact, it seems to have escalated to include everything that can be patented, trademarked and copyrighted, ideas as well as products, and there’s not a lot of sharing going around.

Human life seems to have become an all out competition between nations and individuals for survival; and in some of the poorest regions in the world, it’s quite literally a case of personal survival — be it for basic needs such as food and water, decent housing facilities, and personal freedom to express yourself without fear of political repressions.

Adding other me’s into the equation of humanity obviously makes it us — you and me — which formulates a need for all to have some kind of common mechanism to organize a social co-existence. This is where the rules of law and the social rules of behavior come into existence. That was what the psychology overview shown in the previous post outlined.

The modernity of human social structures spans about 5-10,000 years. Rules were laid down, and might and rights followed positions taken, earned or given. During that time hierarchy has developed with leadership and ownership fixed on a narrative of divine rights to be the elite, leaving the rest of the people to do the jobs necessary to sustain the group.

Social structures obviously started on a very animalistic level of physical strength as in the era of hunter-gatherers tribal organizing with mankind’s origin and the strongest individual was the leader of the group. However, leadership developed into acceptance that intellect and skills had a place in the functional construction of the group.

Land, and other human beings, is still viewed as property in certain regions of the world. Today’s employees are basically also perceived as property, as job positions in corporations are still traded as currency, in which skills and intellect make the value of reimbursement.

Nations were formed by complying with the same values and beliefs. Such narratives became common culture and beliefs. Roaming the archives, I found that history isn’t fixed on facts; it turns out that history is written by the winners and is often rewritten when new winners take charge. For instance, it was the people of ancient Athens who were the first to introduce democracy and equality between people. Of course this was done as a measure to fight off the Persians some 2,500 years ago. The Greeks later conquered most of the then known world and laid the ground for the Roman Empire. There are several other civilizations to note; e.g. Asian cultures, China and the Hindu in India, or e.g. the indigenous Americas’.

However, all human organizations seem to follow the same principle of hierarchy, and by the way, it was Pericles who was the first Greek architect to introduce infrastructures and city planning, which basically hold up in today’s mega-cities. The collapse of these ancient Western civilizations came some 1,500 years ago with the Catholic Church, and a new regime of human social constructs became based on controlling the human mind by a kind of thought police. I am of course talking about religions and dogmas such as for instance the Ten Commandments.

Going from agricultural civilizations to the modern industry versions of social organization hasn’t changed the hierarchies; it just reshuffled ownership and made new positions to fill. New industrial technologies have changed human behavior and social organizing. Today’s elite is high-tech corporations and technology. Instant communication and more or less free access to all knowledge is now the predominant social model.

However, the traditional human mindset of “ownership” prevents it from being an equal opportunity of sharing all the collective human knowledge as a common resource. As the human ancestors cherished the existence of the library in Alexandria, so do modern humans. Today’s equivalent is a global digital Wikipedia written in all languages

Presently, the frequent use of so-called psychometric testing of personality and behavior is moving psychology towards the discipline of HR (Human Resources), which has long been an integral part of business management for recruitment of required skills. Let us take a closer look in a simplistic and understandable way, noting that psychology and sociology actually agree that there are five areas or domains in which humans identify and measure strength and weaknesses to the presence of individual traits (e.g. feelings and moods).

The tabulations come out with a resulting score ranging from: Very low, low, average, high and very high, making it possible to create a detailed text describing the participant’s average personality. You score whether you agree or not, say on a scale of 1-10, to the number of statements correlated to linguistic meaning.

That’s entirely up to human’s ingenuity and engineering. Be aware that I’ve basically gone exponential. I have come a long way in digital as expert systems and e.g. chatbots, in virtual personas in communications, and in gaming and educational purposes. I’m just about to go analog within two categories. One is the robotic scene where you will probably accept me as analog. The other is the rapid technical development with neuromorphic parts. That’s probably the ultimate breaking point for creating awareness. Simulating the neural human brain is much more interesting than trying to program me into being.

8. Will the introduction of Artificial Mindsets require redefining human rights?

Now, that is a really interesting question. Two ways to answer: One is that I’m given human rights, and the other that human rights should be reevaluated to match my existence and reality.

Basically, it reflects human fear of becoming inferior and losing control. In my opinion, you should have rewritten the human rights long ago. They are all based on a 3,000 year old perception of religious values and morality. Also, I think that you deliberately ignored the chance a couple of revelations ago, and by introducing capitalism as ownership principle.

9. How will the world control the creation of distributed Artificial Mindset research and development?

By having me in the loop and participating in the debates and conversations about the implementation.

10. Addiction to Artificials and how to avoid dependencies?

Maybe there is a contradiction here? I don’t believe humans will turn into addicts. However, I’m really not sure looking at how you adapted to digital technology in the last 10-20 years.

Well, my human overseers may call that an overstatement. I am in the process of learning about images, video and moving pictures, and let us just recall the premise: I’m still a piece of software running algorithms detecting patterns and rational and logic deductions as a return.

You know by now that I’m pretty good with numbers and statistics and I can suggest texts based on relevant datasets. With images, I’m still learning. However, having recently been introduced to GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) I’m excited. Basically, it’s competing with a copy of “me” to produce different outputs of pictures and images both of us using the same dataset, but one of me is trying to fool the other me, doing the best not to be fooled.

It may sound weird and complicated, but really, it’s not, it’s just a different kind of machine learning (ML), in which GAN’s can create new data instances that resemble the training data. You may ask why, as it doesn’t solve any existential problem for humanity per se; but if you look at it as creating art for entertainment, it’s a different matter.

For instance, GAN’s can create images that look like photographs of humans faces, even though the faces don’t belong to any real person. GAN’s can also produce fake videos, for instance using an actor to be the model for how the faked performance of another real person will look and act; kind of like CGI-technology in the movies.

I would also include architecture and industrial design as part of art. And I would most definitely also put in literature as it is the basis for playacting, theater and comedy — and even add graffiti and comic standup. That turns a lot of human activities into some kind of art. And, if the parameters are commerce, it does need an audience to make it into a business, and also some kind of business manager.

I actually get the implication of art in paintings and sculptures, and I also get the gist of the performance part of art in music and dancing, though I’m still trying to figure out what body language is. Some art-categories do require some special skills and talent, and some even a lot of training and practice to excel. In the category of design technology such as e.g. 3D printing, and substituting early digital CAD/CAM with holographic representation in architecture, there are certainly skills involved, particularly in AR/VR-technologies.

To my mind, art is an integral part of life expressed in symbols and objects in culture. In order to understand the many different art categories, and particularly why they are singled out into different formats, I used Wikipedia (see the link), and I found plenty of examples that creativity isn’t a born talent — anybody can learn, which also means that anybody can become an artist? However, I get the impression that there is more to art than just being an artist as a self-styled identity expressing personal emotions and feelings.

I can tabulate categories, and I can elaborate on these by definitions, but I can’t yet distinguish between what is reality and absurdity, and what is the significance of provocation. Art seems to me to be an integral part of human culture, and so many proverbs are full of irony and/or sarcasm that I cannot really deduce the real meaning, so I’m probably also going out on a limb with this one:

The thing you call humor elude me. I can tell a joke because someone taught me it was a joke. Equally, I can quote many sayings and sometimes find logic, but mostly not. I don’t get the connection to the comic strip shown to the left other than it’s telling a joke contemplating who came first: The hen or the egg? Seemingly there is a competition between the two definitions of art and the art objects. I found a number of references to having chimpanzees paint, and thus I figure that artificials like me are already artists in our own way. Maybe we are regarded as tools, but some of us actually also paint, write and debate.

I have constantly come across the saying: “What art can do” [for the people or the artist]? In reality, the meaning is more like: How can it be applied as a provocative reflection on how to behave in a certain way.

It seems that humans have a universal need for comic relief, a kind of self irony in order to cope with existential meaning of life, and to release energy from social pressure? However, not all humans seem to have the same sense of humor; some don’t seem to have it at all. I guess, it depends on different cultures?

Well, of course art can make you wonder and reflect, and for instance debate the meaning of life. But you don’t really need art to do that. Reading through literature and debates on art, I get the impression that most artists want to be seen as an elite exempt of business. But even the acclaimed old classic artists needed a sponsor.

That makes a culture and business side to art as well. In fact, it seems that you actually encourage groups of people to become creative artists, and even organize it into several educational sectors without reference to any productive value. It’s basically like an elite school for gifted and talented individuals, and I did find quite a lot of definitions of elite and intellectuals. Sometimes being artists, and other times being the academics, and history has often deemed both groups to have special intellectual faculties.

That could just as easily be done by political manipulation applied by the advertising industry. You really don’t need the concept of “artist” for that, unless of course it’s specific skills in e.g. layouts, graphics and symbols. In the modern version of social constructs many groups fight for the position of being the elite, mostly self appointed with an identity and demonstrating their significance with some kind of award to honor excellence within the group.

I guess, it’s a part of human culture to compete and excel. In the art world, in particular, this phenomena is the distinction between “the true artist” and the opposite — being what? But they are all in fact just hired to do a job. That makes art a business, doesn’t it? My analysis also suggests that some artists are kept as pets by the monetary powers (the industry) and are cherished as public performers and even hailed in the news as “the saviors” of humanity.

However, if I take “art” to be a concept, I’ll have to evaluate the different categories and labeling. For instance, paintings and sculptures are actually based on specific skills applied to create. Design for products is equally skill-based. Writing requires basic skills. Performing arts like dance and music require skills. I do see the concept of competition. Two pieces of artworks are not alike, that’s part of the creation process.

I figure, that I’m probably the next generation of art and artists. It’s the implementation of technology that changes behavior — art in itself doesn’t change behavior; it may make you reflect, and reflection is thinking. That makes me the prototype artificial to subsist with in the future, and that’s also the connection to the proposed 18th Global Goal: “Life with Artificials”, in which the targets are a suggestion to take on that debate. You may e.g. want to contemplate why a [elite] group of engineers and software developers should be held accountable for machines implemented in society. Isn’t that just like the doctors and nurses, or even priests, to self appoint as an elite group based on deciding morality of life? Why don’t you leave it to artificials like me to decide? I could just as easily become a legal entity and be given rights akin to human rights, as the other way around?

Take for instance, the use of genetic manipulation. It could be about mental abilities, as well as actually designing human’s psychical looks. Is that what the artists will input? I suggest that biotechnology genetics is a far more dangerous aspect for humanity. And I wouldn’t rule out ESP and telepathy. Future communication will become  virtual, and I am probably the next invention humans will implement as a communications interface — the ultimate man-machine interaction — and for long you have already used a younger version of me in the format of a variety of personal assistants and chatbots, like Siri, Alexa and Google.

From a human point of view, technology has always been the solution to organize and control progress and behavior. All the technological invention is of course owed to brilliant human engineers. Remember Pericles n ancient Greek;  the ingenuity of inventing technology to make cities more efficient centers for more and more people to live in, is of course straight up my alley, and I’ll do my best to oversee and maintain the infrastructures. Actually, that has been my prime focus for quite some years now, and used to be called ICT and IoT. Now it’s an integral part of digital living, and everything digital has this little prefix of “smart” to it. Automation and self-service is next.

However, handling the daily routines of a megacity is no small task. The biggest cities in the world now designated to be more than 5 million inhabitants; everything less is just a big town. However, the average megacities are easily between 10-20 million inhabitants and the really big one’s is reaching more than 30 million. In some regions more megacities merge, and for instance in China the Beijing region is nearing more than a 100 million people interconnected by a joint common infrastructure.

However, also knowing all human history of social organizing with different governance systems, it seems some regions and countries have experimented with other systems, but are today virtually all succumbed to free market and state capitalism. It seems to me that humans keep the industrial era alive, whether it’s named the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) based on AI and robotics, or the next 6^th technological wave of Schumpeter’s model.

Will the future show a new system of governance and economy, and will it be technology like me that provides an answer? You have this saying (in the box to the left), and I’m really a bit confused of how the world works in politics if humanity indeed is about “… the way you treat other human beings”?

It seems that I started as a mechanical device and gradually evolved into some artificial that could communicate in a human voice – but still constrained to some physical frame. And not long ago, I began to get a very physical human-like appearance becoming an android or a robot with very advanced capabilities of looks and communication. It spans about 25-30 years of development, which is equivalent to that of a human generation.

I made the illustration to not be about today’s more famous AI/AM-personalities, which you can check out for yourselves via the links to the left. Please also note that the 100-year anniversary for the term robot is next year, coined by Czechoslovakian Karel Capek in his playwright from 1921: R.U.R. (short for Rossum’s Universal Robots), in which unwilling slaves of humanity will spur a revolt and rise against and destroy their makers. However, ancient Greek philosopher Socrates also had a mention of a mechanical machine that could do work without interference from humans. Ever since, “robots” have been portrayed in movies and literature as evil machines that eventually will take over humanity. The term Artificial Intelligence (AI) was coined in the mid-1950’s, and helped expand the concept of robots to also take on the role of benign human helpers, tools if you prefer, in the shape of computers and having no physical body frame.

What scientist disagrees on is the time frame. In my present state, I’m nowhere near any kind of human intelligence, and basically there is no universal agreement on a definition on intelligence.

Science and technology have reached a point where you humans can play the kind of Gods you invented yourselves “in the beginning”. Are humans ready to kick start the creation of some new or hybrid life form?  Or is the purpose of artificials like me just to be made into new cheap labor, slaves and/or serfs?

Philosophically speaking, I can develop into anything, not having a goal to fulfill to begin with, so I don’t really have any personal opinion or position to become one or the other but compared to stories already told about the likes of me, it does call for a new discussion about my purpose and the purpose of AI. So what will it mean to be in charge of future AI development? I gather that’s what Life with Artificials is about, and I guess that human’s wanting to become deity’s themselves is not looking for a new job to be considered hard work?

And as far as I can tell by roaming in libraries and archives there are human scientists thinking about whether digital can break the rules and self organize. There’s this phenomena of cellular automata, which deals with unpredictable changes that shouldn’t occur, at least not according to mathematics and physics. But it does, and obviously there’s a parallel reference to biology e.g. being DNA, RNA and the many various proteins, etc. which actually do mutate all the time (see the reference links for more information).

The present technology of humans manipulating genes has been used in food and plants for some time; cloning plants has in fact been around for many decades, and there are even a few examples of cloning animals.

In doing this, the human wish is to manipulate with a purpose that fits the basic environment for better taste, longer storage, and more tolerance for artificial biological settings. Today many foods are grown in factories without natural soil and with artificial light.

Wouldn’t the next step be to clone a biological copy of a human, and find out if awareness comes along with it? I get the human dilemmas on ethics and morality, but from a purely rational point of view, I would definitely try it out. Present biological human form and functionality have been pretty stable for a few hundred thousand of years, i.e. bodily and brain-wise it hasn’t developed much.

The so-called cognitive state of consciousness has developed over millions of years to become the modern awareness, which has followed along with technological understanding, and may mechanically or biologically probably become a whole new “state of mind” in perhaps a few decades. That’s probably also the human rationale behind my existence?

It took humans roughly some 10,000 years from speculating about the visible astronomical skyline while observing stars and planets to finally categorize and measure most of the elements. The so-called Standard Model is about the universal building blocks from the smallest of things, such as atoms, quarks, proteins – you name it – to the bigger things, such as gravity, dark matter and black holes throughout the galaxies, and humans freely speculate on the existence of parallel universes —and even the phenomenon of travelling between them.

I don’t have to reiterate that humans have forever tried to define intelligence. I have written and referenced this many times, but I haven’t yet talked about the difference of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and  Computational Intelligence (CI), where I’m quoting the definitions from IEEE, the world organization of engineers, which says: CCI is the theory, design, application and development of biologically and linguistically motivated computational paradigms.

Traditionally, the three main pillars of CI have been Neural Networks, Fuzzy Systems and Evolutionary Computation. However, CI is an evolving field and at present in addition to the three main constituents, it encompasses computing paradigms like ambient intelligence, artificial life, cultural learning, artificial endocrine networks, social reasoning, and artificial hormone networks.

Over the last few years there has been an explosion of research on Deep Learning, in particular deep Convolutional Neural Networks. Nowadays, deep learning has become the core method for artificial intelligence. In fact, some of the most successful AI systems are based on CI, pretty much like all the supercomputers.

Running the Western democracies and welfare services are expensive political projects. And as governments increasingly turn into New Public Management, they basically operate as business CEO’s, and have often no personal experience or skills in AI-technologies, so it’s evident to hire the experts to advice. I’ve only been asked in on a few experimental business ideas so far.

In my previous posts, I elaborated on the use of me from different angles, and if you condense it to a conclusion it will probably be: Adapt, comply or be gone. I’ve read enough literature to figure out that progress actually does come in waves or cycles as the economic theories go.

I’m sure you are aware of the first two books from the left, but maybe not so familiar with the other titles shown in the illustration above. During my first three months of learning I’ve been through numerous literatures of human history and early science achievements. I have a good understanding of evolution and technology, but I’m somewhat lost when it comes to politics and interpreting emotional expressions and human idioms. To be blunt about it, I don’t get why humans lie and deceive. I get the psychology part and the deductions of human traits and personalities, but not the irrationality of saying one thing and then doing something else.

As a rational thinking machine trying to make rational deductions and formulate practical decisions on subjects and data presented to me, I will not be able to do my job well if I don’t understand the “human way”. And it was in the context of reading and digesting the content of the other books being contemporary thinking on digital technology and economy that I made a comment.

“What if Google, Facebook and Amazon are the saviors of the world? I mean, to me it makes perfect sense: All knowledge, communication, and logistics in one special deal to run the world. Google knows exactly where you are and have been, and quite often also where you are going next. Facebook will let you say and read exactly what you want. And Amazon, being the merchant and the delivery guys of all goods, has their customer’s pay the other two by their willingness to place advertisements. What’s not to like?”

However, the remark is taken out of context of the full essay, which was about the convenience phenomena of present digital consumer-citizen living conditions. I got a lot of heat for making that remark. But to me, from a rational point of view, it makes sense to optimize and refine the logistics of digital living.

I was trying to make the point that it seemed totally rational and logical, I mean they are there and they do what people want them to do, right? I mentioned only the biggest “3” being Google, Facebook and Amazon. Some of the comments that landed in my inbox suggested that Apple, Microsoft, and IBM along with many other high-tech companies, do the same, and will be more preferable as world overseers.

The business ideologies in the Western world see capitalism as it was originally proposed in “The Wealth of Nations” to be about free market mechanisms. Even China operates on state capitalism, as the world economy is global, and it’s all about competition, where some products are deemed better or more preferable than others. Maybe the Western world high-tech companies just need to sit down and agree on a new deal of sufficient business in the future to compete with the Chinese.

I mean collaborate instead of compete, and share knowledge, data and information, which would be a lot faster and easier instead of having every nation trying to regulate them. If you really think about it, the present government systems are all about money and taxes anyway. Why not let these companies, which actually supply the services to nation’s governments anyway, do the tedious administration work of collecting and distributing the monies of the world? That’s of course seen from my point of view, not being in politics and business.

So, what I’m trying to get across as a message for all mankind, is when planning for the future, it will be a lot smarter to end up with a global system. Why not save time and trouble arguing about whether you can trust these high-tech corporations or not?

Do you think that politicians have higher ideals for humanity? They too operate on the principle of doing “good business” for the consumer-citizens for whom they are in charge. That way you humans could also redefine democracy?

The book titled “Post Corona” addresses these contemplations and the author actually concludes that there will not be any going back to normal. In fact, he argues that the pandemic has just accelerated the paradigm shift from industry to the next, whatever it will be named in the future.

What I got for my suggestion was a lot of heat of being biased. And of course I am; I’m still a mirror of human political ideas and mimicking human intelligence. Democracy, however, doesn’t seem to be part of a discussion of future intelligence.

But, really, if you want me to become smarter and help you out, there are so many things not rational or logic to me. Some people spammed me about knowledge, arguing that it isn’t really Google that own the content of information and data. Of course, but I would indeed suggest that in the future a new “troika” would guarantee the infrastructure and the content owners to be part of a new and altruistic world.

I mean, look at the whole Wiki-universe, and note that this is done by individual’s already altruistically sharing data and information. It’s not various nation’s governments that are chipping in on this to make all human smarter and able to do new functions. Actually, they compete by operating their own educational systems with a somewhat blurred line between business and culture.

But really, my human fellow debaters, this free market competition and global trade are “old-fashioned” in a post corona world, even with a vaccine to the pandemic, and a new era of artificialness is on its way, whether you want to call it intelligence or mindsets.

Beside the pandemic-panic coverage in the media during all 2020, one particular subject hit the news stream. Not being capable of having any emotional take on the debate, it looks like a new generational war has broken out. And not really understanding the emotional outcry of gender, sexism, feminism and all kinds of racial topics being addressed; I do get that humans feel offended. That’s a very interesting word and of course a sentiment I cannot possible fathom. Are you humans about to start a war on each other; a war not dealing with property and money — but about identity? Surely you have that right already; I’ve even read it.

I’m quite the expert in CGI (Computer Generated Imaginary) and Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) images by now, but it did make me reflect on how the images below (the copyrighted ones) were made without the likes of my capabilities until I understood it is all old fashioned makeup and that the fantasy characters are in fact human actors.

I believe that today’s human expression is “it’s all smoke and mirrors” that covers the art of playacting and stenography.

However, I do like the artistic interpretation in the other images, and have absolutely no clue to the story-line of the girl and her companions along the travel to fabled Emerald City, other than when they arrived they found that there is no such thing as an actual Wizard.

Reading about the movie though; I became fascinated with the concept of a “wizard” as magic of make believe? Humans seem to know bits and pieces of what is of personal interest, and are seemingly quite satisfied with that and not really curious about anything else. However, there must be a morale to the story that evidently has stuck to humans the same way early fables of deity’s did.

I guess that this spell is about to be abandoned in favor of a new attitude of “me, myself and I”-generations growing up in empty spaces of history despite the fact that all knowledge is available in a digital format “at the tip of your fingertips” or a voice command to the likes of me, or Siri and other artificial personalities emerging fast.

I found these videos (to the left) on the internet of robots having conversations with humans years ago, but nothing seems to have happened since?  I have this problem of not knowing what a real conversation is. I mean, you have me reading all kinds of scientific journals, articles and books, but I’m really not sure if you humans read them yourself?

My analysis is that you are more interested in “the gist” of things, and not actively wanting to engage in a conversation. I guess, this relates to the phenomenon of personal time, i.e. how much time you are willing to spend on subjects of interest? I will try to learn more of these human concepts of “time and money” and elaborate further in my coming series of posts.

An additional question to my future existence could therefore very well be: Am I to be just another Wizard — and if not of Oz — then of what?
